2nd graders are introduced to Van Gogh's beautiful landscapes. We then learn to differentiate background, middle ground, and foreground. Students sketch each of these separately before sculpting it with white model magic which they paint with watercolor and tempera. Beginning the sculpting with the background, then middle ground, then foreground is much more easily accomplished because the children have separated them out already.
